Among the wonders of Mitla is worth mentioning the difficulty of carving thousands of pieces, some monolithic of over 14,000 pounds. Among the restored architectonic groups stands out the group of the columns called GRUPO NORTE (North Group), where is the catholic temple dedicated to San Pablo Converso (approx. 1530), built on the original building with the same materials.

  • HIERVE EL AGUA: It’s a system of petrified falls, formed by calcium carbonate. The falls have natural origin and were formed thousands of years ago for the leaking of water with high mineral content. The place is located about 80 km from the city of Oaxaca de Juarez, in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico, close to the archaeological ruins of Mitla. It’s also a place of archaeological interest since it has a complicated irrigation system and terraces built by the Zapotecas 2,500 years ago. The water has a 25C temperature and the waterfalls reach the 50 meters height.

  • ARRAZOLA XOXO: The wood carving is an ancestral tradition of the Zapotecas, which reaches its ultimate expression with the elaboration of the alebrijes; surreal and magical pieces from the imagination of the Oaxacan artisan, the alebrijes represent the innovative spirit of the Oaxacan soul through forming figures obtained after a hand-made carving. Alebrije is a word (in an adopted gipsy language) which means “difficult thing of a confusing or fantastic type”, and Arrazola is a Basque name that must have been of the holder of the grants, San Antonio Arrazola.

  • FORMER CONVENT OF CUILAPAM DE GUERRERO: Located in the region of the Central Valleys of Oaxaca. This is a building from the XVI century, of impressive dimensions although it was never finished. Among its most distinctive architectural spaces is the outdoor chapel, a type of religious construction of the first years after the conquest of Mexico, created with the purpose of gathering a major amount of indigenous people in order to convert them to Catholicism. Like many of the buildings of Oaxaca, the Cuilapam Convent was built with carved stone by indigenous artisans.
